Sergeant Matthews served as a Sergeant in Co. C and K, Findlay’s Ordnance, 5th GA Reserves, and later, was an officer in Camp Smith, United Confederate Veterans/UCV. Findlay’s Ordnance guarded the Macon Arsenal in Macon, Georgia, as well as rode the railroad when ordnance was being transported. Findlay’s Ordnance became part of the the 5th Georgia Reserves at both Camps Cobb and Oglethorpe near Macon.

He served as a reconnaissance officer during World War II in the Pacific Theatre. This group was then known as the “Alamo Scouts”. He was awarded a Bronze Star Medal and in 1988 the “Special Forces Shoulder Tab” for his distinguished service with the “Alamo Scouts” As a member of the National Guard, which he joined in 1949, he was instrumental in the creation of the Sandersville Unit. He retired from this unit in 1979 at a Lieutenant Colonel.
